So I’ve got a confession to make about tofu. I used to hate everything about it. Yup, I hated the texture, smell, and taste. I didn’t know how to make tofu tasteful, making it a major struggle when I turned vegetarian. Also, I didn’t understand the difference between soft, firm, and extra firm tofu. Thinking everything was the same so I didn’t bother choosing a specific one. But I started to learn some tricks and gained some tips from my mom and friends. Like meat, you can season and marinate the tofu to make it taste better. So I’ve decided that I want to share my favorite ways to make tofu more tasteful.
Creating a series where I upload a tofu marinade or vegan recipe every Tuesday. Originally I wanted to stick to taco Tuesday recipes but I need to be more diverse. I will Also, give an example of how I would pair these tofu marinade recipes with. Heads up, I find myself creating a lot of veggie bowls that are helpful to take on the go. Check the recipe below.
Asian Fusion Tofu Marinate
This recipe has both a sweet and salty element which pairs up well with the veggies.
In a bowl, add 1/2 a cup of soy sauce.
Add 1 tbsp of brown sugar or white sugar to the bowl and stir a couple of times.
Grab your ginger and chop into small pieces. Add 1 tsp of ginger into the bowl and stir.
Do the same with the garlic. Chop into small pieces and add 1 tsp of garlic into the bowl and stir.
Let your marinade sit for 2 minutes in the fridge while you are working on the tofu.
Grab your block of firm tofu and start chopping. I prefer to create smaller cubes of tofu but you are free to cut your tofu into small or large cubes. Remeber, the smaller the cubes the faster the marinade will be absorbed.
Take your marinade out of the fridge and stir. Add your tofu into the marinade and stir once again.
Place your bowl back to your fridge for two minutes.
Take bowl out of the fridge and stir again. Let that sit for a minute. This technique will help your tofu absorb the marinate evenly.
After the minute is done, you are ready to cook your tofu.
I like to pair this recipe with a veggie and rice bowl. I like to use 1/2 cup of brown rice (white rice or quinoa is fine) into my bowl. After I like to choose my favorites are carrots, squash, or mushrooms. You are free to choose your favorite vegetables. Lastly, I place 1 serving of my cooked tofu that has been marinated.
